How Anti-lock Brake System Work

Before the invention of the ABS, experienced drivers used to control vehicles by pressing and releasing the brakes. However, drivers could sometimes lose control in panic situations since applying and releasing the brakes could be too difficult.
When the driver holds emergency brakes, the vehicle slows down. However, some wheels may slow faster than the rest. As a result, a driver may lose control and even cause an accident. In such panic moments, the sensor detects the skid, and the control module reduces the hydraulic pressure thereby reducing the grip on the brake disk.

ABS are not used for fast stopping

Ideally, ABS are not used to stop the vehicle faster than the instant brakes. The major function is to allow drivers to control the car during a fast break. The ABS stop all four wheels from locking; hence a driver can quickly steer to avoid hitting the objects that triggered the instant braking.

ABS Help in Negotiating Corners

Most car manufacturers are using the ABS technology to design cars that can easily negotiate corners even at high speeds. The manufacturers use the traction technique to bring about chassis stability. The ABS sensors can detect when the car is about to lose control thereby controlling the wheels. They are also used as a backup on the typical braking system of a vehicle.

Parts that make up the ABS

1. Speed sensors
Speed sensors are used to gauge deceleration and acceleration of wheels during an instant brake situation. They function by the utilization of a magnet or a toothed wheel to estimate the rotation speed of a wheel. They send the information to the sensor.
2. Valves
The valves are used for regulating the hydraulic pressure during emergency braking by either reducing or increasing the pressure. An ABS can fail if the valves are clogged, which would affect the functionality of an ABS.
3. Pump
The pump restores the pressure of the hydraulic system after it is released by the valves. The pump releases the actual amount of pressure required to stop wheel skidding.
4. Controller
The controller receives signals from the sensor. After receiving a signal, the controller activates the valves.
The parts function together for the ABS to work properly. Failure of any part may affect the functionality of the whole ABS.

Raw materials used in the manufacture of ABS

Soft iron is used in making the ABS due to its high magnetic ability. Some other parts of the hydraulic system are constructed of copper and steel. The master cylinder is made of aluminum. Most used anti-lock brake parts can be recycled. So, if your system is dead, you can consider recycling. Improper disposal of vehicle parts has a negative impact on the environment.
